Former President Donald Trump was detained on suspicion of plotting to rig Georgia's 2020 presidential election.
On Thursday night, the state of Georgia charged former president Donald Trump with conspiring to rig the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. He was taken into custody at the Fulton County prison.
The former president's fingerprints were obtained, and a booking photo, or "mugshot," was later made and made public. Although Trump is charged in four different criminal instances, this is the first time a mugshot of him has been taken.
In Georgia, Trump is accused of 13 different offenses, including racketeering and many charges of fraud and making false statements. Trump and his 18 co-defendants in the lawsuit have until Friday to surrender.
Released mugshot of Trump
The moment Trump was taken into custody and taken to the Fulton County prison, officials published his mugshot.
The image is the first-ever public mugshot of a former U.S. president.
Trump was detained earlier this year in connection with three other criminal charges, but no mugshot was taken.
Trump publishes his own arrest photo online.
The former president's mugshot was released by Trump's official Truth Social account, which later pinned it to the top of his social media profile.Above the image, a caption in a plain serif style said, "MUG SHOT — AUGUST 24, 2023."
Two additional ideas were written below the mugshot.
The first one is "Election interference."
"NEVER SURRENDER!" is the second.
The website URL for Trump's campaign was also mentioned in the post.
Trump leaves the Fulton County Jail after being booked and arrested
Trump left the Fulton County Jail in a motorcade that looked to be going back to an Atlanta airport less than 20 minutes after being there.
Whether Trump will make a speech before re-boarding his private plane was not immediately known.
Trump confronted reporters momentarily on the tarmac of the airport after his recent arraignment in a different federal case in Washington, D.C., when he vented his anger at President Joe Biden and the city's seat of government.
Trump is about 30 pounds lighter in jail than in his most recent White House medical, according to documents.
Trump's weight was 215 pounds, down significantly from the amount on his final White House physical report, according to prison documents from Fulton County.
Sean Conley, the White House physician at the time, stated that Trump weighed 244 pounds in the document from June 2020.
Data from tests held between November 2019 and April 2020 were compiled in that letter.
Trump was detained at the Fulton County Jail but released afterward
At 7:44 p.m. ET, Trump was taken into custody and later released from the Fulton County prison.
He was fingerprinted and had a mug photo taken when he was booked.
Trump arranged for his release on a $200,000 bail through a bondsman.
What will happen in the Georgia election case next?
Trump has been detained and freed, but his 13 criminal counts in the Georgia election meddling case have not yet been brought to court.
In a court filing last week, Atlanta DA Fani Willis recommended that Trump and the other 18 defendants in the case be arraigned the week of September 5.
Some arraignments, according to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, may take place remotely.
As of right now, Willis has proposed a trial date of October 23, which is just two months away, and Trump's lawyer has hinted that they would argue this point.
In a court filing earlier on Thursday, Trump's lawyer stated that they also intend to separate his case from that of co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro, who is pushing for a swift trial.
Another defendant, the former head of the White House
Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, a different co-defendant, has a hearing scheduled for Monday morning in U.S. District Court in Atlanta on his request to transfer the state-level election case to federal court.
Trump raises money for his presidential campaign by selling his mugshot
Shortly after being arrested and leaving for home in New Jersey, Trump started exploiting his mugshot to gather money for his campaign.
In a "personal message" he sent supporters, Trump said, "Despite having committed no crime, I was jailed today at the notoriously brutal prison in Fulton County, Georgia.
The message read, "The American people are aware of what is happening. "What has happened is a mockery of justice and election meddling,"
